The weekend rut, solved

Around noon, the reason half of you came: a proper Kerala seafood lunch at a local island home — karimeen, prawns, fish curry, the lot, ordered ahead so it's ready when you are. Post-lunch, the slow hours: a village walk past the flooded pokkali fields, some fishing, cycling for the restless ones, and a lot of doing nothing productively. Then the payoff — stay for the sunset over the backwaters, genuinely one of the best in the Kochi area, before heading back for the evening. Home by night, weekend well spent, and not a single mall involved.
What to sort before you go
Because it's a village, a little planning saves the day. Arrange the boat and the island lunch in advance (walk-ins can come up empty, especially on weekends). Carry water and sunscreen; the backwater sun is deceptive. Toilets are scarce, so plan around it. And keep it low-key and clean — locals are protective of this place, and a respectful gang is a welcome gang. Split a taxi or convoy your own cars; parking is easy.
