Urumbikkara — Off-Road Trails & Forest Falls
Deep in the green wilderness near Kottayam, Urumbikkara is raw, untamed Kerala — cascading waterfalls, clear river pools, bone-rattling off-road jeep trails and forest biking through the Western Ghats. Another of Fetraco's signature hidden destinations, made for the adventurous.
Why visit
Urumbikkara sits in the same offbeat highland belt as Yendayar, in the wooded hills of Kottayam district — a place of plantation slopes, rainforest and tumbling water that almost never appears in a conventional Kerala brochure. That's the point. Here the landscape is steep, green and gloriously untidy, with hill streams carving waterfalls and bathing pools out of the forest and rough tracks threading up into the canopy. For travellers who've ticked off the tea hills and backwaters and want the wild, working countryside behind the postcards, this is it.
Adventure is the whole draw. Urumbikkara is prime off-road jeep country: a 4x4 grinds and fords its way over genuinely challenging forest and estate trails to ridgelines and viewpoints far beyond the reach of any tour bus. Between the drives you can cool off with river bathing in clear forest pools, hike to hidden waterfalls, and ride the quiet plantation roads by bike with the Ghats rolling away on every side. It's a hands-on, slightly muddy, thoroughly exhilarating kind of day out.
Because Urumbikkara lies right in Fetraco's backyard near our Yendayar base, we know the trails, the safe bathing spots and the best falls intimately — knowledge you simply won't find on a map. It pairs naturally with Yendayar for a two-or-three-day offbeat escape, or as a wild adventure counterpoint to the more polished legs of a Kerala tour. Come for the kind of unfiltered nature that most visitors to God's Own Country never experience.
Best time to visit
September to February is the best time to visit — the waterfalls are full and forceful after the monsoon, the rivers run clear for bathing, and the off-road trails and trekking are at their finest. Peak monsoon (June–August) makes the tracks slippery and the streams unsafe for bathing.
How to reach
Urumbikkara lies in the eastern hills of Kottayam district, close to Fetraco's Yendayar base — roughly 40 km from Kottayam town and railway station, and about 3 hours (around 115 km) from Cochin International Airport. The approach climbs through plantations into the forest. As local specialists, Fetraco handles transfers, guides and gear directly.

Good to know
Urumbikkara — frequently asked
What is there to do in Urumbikkara?
It's an offbeat adventure destination — off-road jeep safaris, hidden rainforest waterfalls, river bathing in clear forest pools, forest biking and hill trekking, all in the quiet Kottayam highlands near Fetraco's Yendayar base.
Do I need a guide for Urumbikkara?
Yes — the waterfalls, bathing spots and off-road trails are unmarked and remote, so local guidance is essential for both finding them and staying safe. Fetraco, based nearby in Yendayar, leads every trail, drive and dip personally.
Can I combine Urumbikkara with Yendayar?
Absolutely, and we recommend it. The two offbeat spots sit side by side in Kottayam's hills and pair perfectly into a two-or-three-day wild escape, easily added to a wider Kerala tour package with Vagamon or the backwaters.
