Why visit
Munnar earns its fame honestly. Once the summer retreat of the British in colonial South India, its hills are quilted with some of the highest tea estates in the world, planted by the old Kanan Devan company more than a century ago. The contoured rows of tea, clipped flat and luminously green, sweep over every ridge to the horizon — a landscape that feels engineered yet entirely natural. Stand at a viewpoint at first light and you watch the valleys fill with cloud while the sun gilds the peaks above.
Beyond the postcard tea hills, Munnar guards real wilderness. Eravikulam National Park shelters the largest surviving population of the endangered Nilgiri Tahr, a mountain goat so habituated to visitors it grazes within feet of the trail to Anamudi, South India's highest peak at 2,695 metres. Every twelve years the slopes here turn violet when the Neelakurinji flower blooms en masse — a phenomenon that draws travellers from across the world.

Best time to visit
September to March is the sweet spot — clear skies, lush post-monsoon greenery and cool 10–25°C days. The monsoon (June–August) is dramatic and waterfall-rich but misty; April–May is warmer and ideal for those chasing the rare Neelakurinji bloom years.
How to reach
The nearest airport is Cochin International (about 110 km / 3.5–4 hours by road), with Madurai a similar distance on the Tamil Nadu side. The nearest railhead is Aluva or Ernakulam.
