Why visit
Kumarakom unfolds along the eastern shore of Vembanad, the longest lake in India, a few kilometres west of Kottayam. Where Alappuzha buzzes with houseboat traffic, Kumarakom feels gentler and more secluded — a lacework of canals, paddy bunds and coconut islands where country boats glide past villages largely untouched by hurry. It's the backwater experience distilled to its most serene, which is exactly why it has become Kerala's address for upscale lakeside resorts and slow, restorative escapes.
Nature is the headline. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, a protected stretch of mangrove and woodland on the lake, is a haven for herons, egrets, darters, kingfishers and the famous winter migrants — Siberian storks among them — that arrive from November. A dawn cruise or a guided walk through the sanctuary's wooden trails is birdwatching at its best, with the still lake mirroring the sunrise. The wider Vembanad wetland is a Ramsar-listed site of international ecological importance.

Best time to visit
November to February is ideal — pleasant, dry weather and the arrival of migratory birds at the sanctuary, making it the best season for both cruising and birdwatching. The post-monsoon months are greenest; June–September brings heavy rain but a lush, dramatic, low-season calm.
How to reach
Kumarakom is about 14 km (30 minutes) from Kottayam, the nearest railway station, and roughly 85 km (around 1.5 hours) from Cochin International Airport.
