Why visit
Alappuzha — long known to travellers as Alleppey — sits at the centre of the Kuttanad region, one of the few places on earth where farming happens below sea level. Its backwaters are a vast, interlinked network of lakes, rivers and hand-dug canals fringed by coconut groves and bright-green paddy. Life here moves by water: children paddle to school, vendors sell fish from canoes, and the famous kettuvallam houseboats — once rice barges, now floating teak-and-thatch suites — carry travellers into the quiet heart of it all.
An overnight houseboat cruise is the headline experience, and rightly so. You settle onto a private deck as the boat noses through Vembanad Lake and the narrower village channels, a chef cooking just-caught karimeen (pearl spot fish) and Kerala curries on board. Sunset over the paddies, lamplight on the water and the dawn chorus of waterbirds make this one of India's great slow-travel journeys — a fixture of our Kerala honeymoon packages.
Alappuzha is also alive with culture and colour. Each August the Punnamada Lake erupts with the Nehru Trophy Boat Race, where snake boats over 100 feet long, rowed by a hundred oarsmen chanting in unison, surge for the finish. Beyond the boats there's a long golden beach with its colonial pier, the canal-laced old town, and easy day trips to Kuttanad's villages — depth and variety that reward more than a single night.
Best time to visit
November to February brings the most comfortable weather for cruising — dry, breezy and pleasantly warm. The backwaters are lushest just after the monsoon; visit in mid-August if your heart is set on the Nehru Trophy Boat Race. Avoid peak monsoon downpours in June–July for houseboat comfort.
How to reach
Cochin International Airport is about 75 km (1.5–2 hours) away, while Alappuzha has its own railway station well connected along the Kerala coast. How long is a typical houseboat cruise?
A standard overnight cruise boards around midday, cruises through the afternoon, moors overnight and disembarks the next morning after breakfast. Day cruises of a few hours are available if you're short on time or prone to seasickness.
Alleppey or Kumarakom for the backwaters?
Both share Vembanad Lake. Alappuzha has the larger houseboat fleet and busier canal life, while Kumarakom is quieter and birdlife-rich. Many of our Kerala tour packages combine the two for the best of both.
Are houseboats suitable for families and honeymooners?
