Why visit
Vagamon, straddling the Idukki–Kottayam border at around 1,100 metres, is the kind of place that surprises travellers who think they've seen every Kerala hill station. Its hallmark is open, treeless meadow — soft grassy domes the locals call 'kurinji' hills that roll for miles, grazed by cattle and wrapped in drifting cloud. Between them lies a famously photogenic pine forest, planted in neat ranks decades ago, where shafts of light slant through the trunks onto a carpet of needles. It feels more alpine than tropical, a rare register for South India.
It is also Kerala's paragliding capital. The combination of high grassy launch hills, deep valleys and reliable thermals has made Vagamon a magnet for free-flight, hosting international paragliding festivals. A tandem flight here — strapped to an experienced pilot, lifting off the meadow and banking out over the green folds far below — is the most exhilarating thing you can do in the Kerala highlands, and Fetraco arranges flights with certified operators in season.
There's depth beyond the thrill, too. Vagamon is a spiritual crossroads where a hilltop church, a temple and a Sufi shrine sit within sight of one another, giving the place its reputation for harmony. Best time to visit
August to May is generally fine, but October to February is the highlight — crisp, cool weather, mist-draped meadows and the clearest conditions for paragliding. The post-monsoon months are greenest. Carry warm layers, as Vagamon nights can drop sharply.
How to reach
Vagamon is about 100 km (3–3.5 hours) from Cochin International Airport and roughly 65 km from Kottayam, the nearest major railway station. The final approach climbs through tea and rubber estates on winding hill roads.
