Thekkady is the gateway to Periyar, one of India's most atmospheric wildlife reserves and a designated tiger reserve sprawling across nearly 925 square kilometres of the Cardamom Hills. At its heart lies a large lake created by a 19th-century British dam — its drowned, skeletal trees rising from the water giving the reserve its signature, slightly haunted beauty. This is one of the few places where you can watch wildlife from a boat: herds of elephants, sambar deer, gaur (Indian bison) and a riot of birdlife gather along the wooded shoreline, especially in the dry season.
While tigers are elusive, the reserve teems with life, and Periyar pioneered community-led eco-tourism in India. Former poachers, retrained as guides, now lead some of the finest jungle experiences here — from dawn bamboo-rafting and border hikes to the thrilling overnight 'jungle scout' and tiger trail treks that take you on foot through the buffer forest. October to March offers the most pleasant weather and good wildlife viewing. The dry months of March to May concentrate animals around the lake for the best sightings, though days are warmer. The monsoon turns the forest lush and dramatic but can disrupt boating and treks.

Thekkady is about 4 hours (around 145 km) from Cochin International Airport and roughly 110 km from Madurai. Kottayam is the nearest major railhead, about 110 km away. Will I see a tiger in Thekkady?
Tiger sightings are rare even though Periyar is a tiger reserve — the forest is dense and the cats elusive. You're far more likely to see elephants, gaur, deer and abundant birdlife, especially from the lake boat safari and on guided treks.
