Why Vagamon became Kerala's flying capital
Vagamon's geography is almost designed for flight: a long grass ridge at Kolahalamedu, on the Kottayam–Idukki border, dropping into a wide open valley with dependable winds moving up the slopes. It's the kind of site pilots travel across the world for — and they do. Vagamon has hosted the Kerala International Paragliding Championship, drawing pilots from the US, Switzerland, France, Germany, Nepal and beyond, in what has been called the biggest paragliding festival in South India. The state government has actively developed the site, which means this isn't a grey-area thrill — it's an established, legal, organised flying destination.
For us it's also personal: Kolahalamedu is roughly forty minutes from our base in Yendayar, and on big cross-country days we've watched gliders drift down over our own valley.
The tandem flight — what actually happens
Almost everyone flies tandem: you're harnessed in front, a certified pilot behind you, and the pilot handles everything — launch, flight and landing. No experience needed. The sequence is simple. You get a safety briefing and are strapped into the harness. Then you and the pilot take a few running steps down the slope together, the wing inflates overhead, and suddenly the ground isn't there anymore. That first second — when running becomes floating — is the moment everyone talks about afterwards.
Then it goes quiet. Below you: tea plantations, pine forest, waterfalls, the patchwork of the valley. Flights typically last around 10 to 30 minutes depending on wind conditions and the day, ending with a gentle, pilot-controlled landing. Most operators offer a camera or GoPro recording for an additional charge — worth it, because you will not believe yourself later.
When to fly
The flying season runs roughly October to May, with December to February as the sweet spot — clear skies, steady wind, the valley at its greenest after the monsoon. Peak monsoon shuts flying down entirely, and even in season, flights operate on the weather's schedule, not yours. Slots generally run through the day from morning to late afternoon, and pilots will delay or cancel if the wind isn't right. One honest tip: treat a cancelled flight as the system working. A pilot who refuses to fly in bad wind is exactly the pilot you want. Build a buffer day into your plan if the flight is the centerpiece of your trip — and if the weather does win, Vagamon's meadows, pine forest and our off-road trails make a cancellation surprisingly easy to forgive.
Rules, limits and who can fly
The basics that apply across operators: tandem passengers generally need to be in their mid-teens or older, within the operator's weight range (roughly 30 to 100+ kg — confirm when booking), and in ordinary good health. Paragliding is not recommended for pregnant travellers or anyone with serious heart, blood-pressure or respiratory conditions.Practical prep: eat only a light meal a couple of hours before flying, wear full-length trousers, a full-sleeved top and proper sports shoes, and carry sunscreen and sunglasses. Keep some cash handy — ATMs in Vagamon town can run dry on busy weekends. You'll sign an indemnity form before the flight; that's standard.

The flight itself is minutes; the day around it is what makes the trip. Getting there
Kolahalamedu's paragliding point sits just outside Vagamon town. Cochin International Airport is roughly 100 km away (about a three-to-three-and-a-half-hour drive), and Kottayam is the nearest major railway station at around 60 km.
