Where Yendayar is — and why families end up here
Yendayar is a small village in Kottayam district, Kerala, on the banks of the Manimala River, in the foothills of Vagamon — off the main Kerala tourist loop and about three hours by road from Cochin International Airport. Most family Kerala trips end up on the same loop: a hotel in Munnar, an hour on a houseboat, a rushed morning at Fort Kochi, home. There's nothing wrong with it — it's just that families with young children or older parents often come back a little tired, having spent the holiday chasing itineraries between packed viewpoints. Yendayar is the opposite offer. Fewer crowds, gentler pace, a lot of green, and a river families actually use — not admire from a boat window.
The Riverside Bliss Stays is our family-run homestay here, on the water. It's Kerala Tourism–classified Silver, which is a real inspection with real standards, not a sticker — safety, cleanliness, service, and food. We built it and we run it, so what your family gets isn't a rented property with a caretaker somewhere far. It's a house with people in it.
What a family day here looks like
Mornings are slow — coffee on the veranda, the river doing its river things, breakfast when the children wake up. The house sits directly on the Manimala; the water is clean and, in most seasons, calm enough near the bank for supervised play. Grandparents tend to settle into the same chair for hours and mean it as a compliment.
Later in the day the choice is yours. Families with younger children usually do the shorter waterfall walks — one is a proper bathing waterfall with a natural pool, another is quieter and sacred, both a short drive from the homestay with a guide. Families with older kids and teenagers often add our off-road jeep trip toward Urumbikkara — a real hill climb, rough and exciting but done in our own jeeps with our own drivers, at a pace that suits the group. Evenings are riverside snacks, a home-cooked Kerala dinner, and the honest quiet of a village at night. No lobby noise, no piped music.

The food question, honestly answered
This is the part families remember most. Our kitchen cooks the food our own family eats — a Kerala home spread: fish from local sources, vegetables from around the village, rice, coconut, the works. Families with young children get milder, less-spiced versions without anyone making a fuss about it. Vegetarian, Jain and dietary preferences are worked around properly — we're a household kitchen, not a restaurant menu, so we cook what your family will actually enjoy. Anyone with an allergy just tells us in advance and we plan around it.

What the Silver Homestay classification actually means
We mention it because it matters, quietly. Kerala Tourism inspects properties across a set of safety, hygiene, service and cultural standards, and awards Silver, Gold or Diamond based on the assessment. Silver means a house that meets the department's family-hospitality benchmarks — safe wiring, clean water, proper linen protocols, trained hosts, verified ownership. For families, especially with older parents or young children, that's the trust layer no unregulated listing carries. If you like to know a place has been checked before you arrive, this is what checked looks like.
Which families it suits — and which it doesn't
You'll love it here if your family wants unhurried, wants nature, wants to eat well without deciding a menu every meal, and enjoys villages more than resorts. It works beautifully for multi-generation families — grandparents to grandchildren under one roof, the way Kerala hospitality was always meant to be — and equally well for young couples with small children who need calm.
It's honestly less right for families who want a swimming pool, in-room entertainment for restless teens, or luxury-resort service. We're a warm, well-run home — not a hotel. If a fully-serviced resort is what your holiday needs, Munnar or Kumarakom serves you better and we'll happily tell you so.
Building the trip around the stay
Most families use Yendayar as the calm centre of a Kerala trip — two or three nights with us to slow the pace, framed by Munnar, Vagamon or the backwaters on either side. Cochin airport is roughly a three-hour drive; Kottayam is the nearest railway hub. We arrange all pickups, day trips and onward transfers, so no one in the family is driving unknown roads. One WhatsApp message with your dates, ages of the children and any family requests, and Team Fetraco will build the whole trip around your Yendayar days.
